Garden snails have about 15,000 teeth
Animal Fun Fact #32

Garden snails have about 15,000 teeth

Garden snails have thousands of microscopic, razor-sharp teeth used for scraping or cutting food like plant matter, algae, and fungus. The teeth are arranged in a ribbon-like formation, forming their tongue otherwise known as the radula. The radula has rows with about 100 teeth on each.  These teeth are not large enough to bite or cause injury.

Goats adjust their "accents" based on their surroundings
Animal Fun Fact #31

Goats adjust their "accents" based on their surroundings

Goats develop unique vocal patterns based on their social groups. When young goats join these social groups, their calls start sounding similar. This vocal plasticity helps them fit in to their social environment. Goats are now the fourth mammal discovered to do this, with the other three being humans, bats, and whales.

Grizzly bears can run as fast as horses
Animal Fun Fact #30

Grizzly bears can run as fast as horses

Grizzly bears are capable of running as fast or even faster than horses over short distances. These speeds can reach about 30-35 mph which matches the top speed of a horse. However, horses have more stamina and are able to maintain this speed over longer distances. Grizzlies can run this fast because the hump on a grizzly's upper back has muscle mass that gives strength to their forelimbs for running and digging.

Wallace's Flying Frog can glide
Animal Fun Fact #29

Wallace's Flying Frog can glide

Wallace's flying frog is also referred to as the gliding frog. It is green with a yellow underside. It has long limbs with fingers and toes webbed to the tips. It's normally found high in trees, and uses the webbing and a fringe of skin stretching between the limbs to parachute itself down to the forest floor. This gliding feature is due to the patagia, membranes that catch the air as it falls.

Honey never spoils
Animal Fun Fact #28

Honey never spoils

Honey can last for thousands of years in sealed pots. Archaeologists have even found pots of honey in ancient Egyptian tombs that are over 3,000 years old and still edible. Honey has a naturally low water content and a pH of about 4 that makes it acidic, two conditions which drive off bacteria that normally cause food to spoil. There is also some hydrogen peroxide that comes from the nectar, and it exhibits antibacterial properties.

Adult mayflies live for one day
Animal Fun Fact #27

Adult mayflies live for one day

Mayflies are found throughout the world. Females lay eggs in the water, and the mayfly will spend most of its life in the water as a nymph. It can live as a nymph for about a year. When they emerge as adults, all energy is put into mating and they will only live long enough to accomplish that goal. They die quickly because the adults lack a mouthpart for feeding.

Fruit bats don't use echolocation
Animal Fun Fact #26

Fruit bats don't use echolocation

Instead of echolocation, fruit bats rely on their excellent eyesight to hunt their prey. Their eyes are large and positioned on the front of their heads to give them binocular version. Additionally, they have large olfactory bulbs to process scents and smells. They use these to find fruit and nectar at night.

Chipmunks are solitary animals
Animal Fun Fact #25

Chipmunks are solitary animals

While fictional chipmunks are often depicted as a group, actual chipmunks are territorial animals that mainly live alone in their own burrows. They only come together to mate, and the female chipmunk will raise her young until they are independent enough to live by themselves.

Cone snails are the most venomous mollusk
Animal Fun Fact #24

Cone snails are the most venomous mollusk

Cone snails are one of the most venomous animals on Earth. They have a large number of different toxins, with the total number of unique peptides across all species of the snail estimated to be over 50,000. They use this venom to hunt prey with a "harpoon-like" tooth called a radula and inject them. Antidotes are difficult to make because the mixture of toxins in each species of cone snail differ widely.

Cats have over one hundred vocal sounds
Animal Fun Fact #23

Cats have over one hundred vocal sounds

Each sound cats make serves a unique purpose. The most common sounds are the meow, hiss, and purr. Kittens typically meow to their mothers for milk. However, most adult cats are only known to meow in the presence of humans.

The horned lizard can shoot blood from its eyes
Animal Fun Fact #22

The horned lizard can shoot blood from its eyes

Horned lizards shoot blood from their eyes when threatened as a defense mechanism. They increase the blood pressure in their heads and rupture blood vessels around the eyelids to eject this blood. Their blood has toxins that drive away predators derived from their diet of venomous ants.

Owls don't have eyeballs
Animal Fun Fact #21

Owls don't have eyeballs

Instead of eyeballs, their eyes are tube-shaped structures that are fixed in their sockets. Owls have to move their heads or bodies to look around. They have developed the ability to rotate their heads 270 degrees to make up for fixed sockets. The bigger eyes allow for better night vision when hunting.

Swifts can fly in the air for extremely long time periods
Animal Fun Fact #20

Swifts can fly in the air for extremely long time periods

Swifts have been recorded flying for their 10 month migration period without landing once. They travel 14,000 miles every year from the UK to Africa. The birds molted and gained new flight feathers in the wings and tail. They are also able to sleep and mate while flying.

Sea slugs are able to perform photosynthesis
Animal Fun Fact #19

Sea slugs are able to perform photosynthesis

Plants are not the only organisms capable of photosynthesis. Certain sea slugs, especially those in the order Sacoglossa have the ability to perform photosynthesis. They do this by ingesting algae and using their chloroplasts, a process referred to as kleptoplasty. In periods where algae as a food source is not readily available, these sea slugs can survive for months using the chloroplasts.

Ants don't have lungs
Animal Fun Fact #18

Ants don't have lungs

Like many other insects, ants lack lungs. They instead have a tracheal system that spreads oxygen throughout the body. Air enters through holes called spiracles which are located in their thorax. This works instead of a respiratory system because of the tiny size of the ant.

Anteaters don't have teeth
Animal Fun Fact #17

Anteaters don't have teeth

Scientifically, an animal with no teeth is referred to as an edentate. This loss of teeth relates to the anteaters' diet. They use their 2 feet long and sticky tongue to eat ants and termites along with their claws to forage. Their snouts also aid by sucking and holding insects for the tongue.

Butterflies taste with their feet
Animal Fun Fact #16

Butterflies taste with their feet

Butterflies don't have tongues. Their proboscis and attennae do have some taste buds. However, the majority of a butterflies taste receptors are located on their feet. When they land on a flower, it tells them if there is nectar in it.

Sloths are excellent swimmers
Animal Fun Fact #15

Sloths are excellent swimmers

Sloths can swim three times faster than they move on land. Their long arms are able to propel them through the water. Additionally, sloths have the ability to slow their heart rates to one-third its normal rate. This allows them to hold their breath for 40 minutes under the water.

Red pandas are the only living member of their family
Animal Fun Fact #14

Red pandas are the only living member of their family

Red pandas were first described as members of the raccoon family because of physical similarities. Later based on DNA, they were assigned to the bear family. However, recent genetic research has placed red pandas in their own independent family named _Ailuridae_. Their closest relatives lived about three to four million years ago. With this evidence, red pandas are most likely closely related to the group that includes raccoons, skunks, and weasels.

Baby elephants can stand within 20 minutes of birth
Animal Fun Fact #13

Baby elephants can stand within 20 minutes of birth

Elephant calves have this adaptive feature to keep up with the constantly traveling herd that migrates to find food and water. They are also able to start walking within an hour. After two days, they can walk at the same pace of the herd to keep up with them.

Flamingos are initially born with gray or white feathers
Animal Fun Fact #12

Flamingos are initially born with gray or white feathers

The bright pink color of flamingos come from beta-carotene, a red-orange pigment that's found in high amounts within the algae and brine shrimp that they eat. The body metabolizes these pigments, turning their feathers pink. In fact, the word "flamingo" comes from the Portuguese or Spanish word "flamengo," meaning flame-colored.

Chameleons don't change colors to blend in with their background
Animal Fun Fact #11

Chameleons don't change colors to blend in with their background

It is a common misconception that chameleons change colors to camouflage. They mainly change colors based on their mood and social interactions. Males will turn bright colors to try to impress females during courtship or to use the colors as a display of aggression. Additionally, it has been suggested that they change color to regulate their body temperature. Chameleons are ectotherms, meaning they can't retain body heat. Becoming darker can help them absorb light and becoming lighter can help them cool off.

Kangaroos are unable to walk backwards
Animal Fun Fact #10

Kangaroos are unable to walk backwards

Kangaroos can't walk or hop backwards because of their massive, muscular tail. Their long feet also inhibit them from walking backward. Their method of movement, jumping, is referred to as saltatory locomotion. They can also move side to side quickly.

Sea otters have the thickest fur of any animal
Animal Fun Fact #9

Sea otters have the thickest fur of any animal

Unlike other marine mammals, sea otters do not have a layer of blubber to keep them insulated in their cold water habitats. They use their dense, water-resistant fur as an alternative method for insulation. Sea otters spend large amounts of time grooming their fur which helps trap air and heat next to their skin. They also have a high metabolism which generates heat through their muscle cells, maintaining a stable body temperature.

Shelters and rescue groups provide as a support system after adopting an animal
Animal Fun Fact #8

Shelters and rescue groups provide as a support system after adopting an animal

After purchasing an animal from the pet store, they will provide little to no help if you have questions or problems with your new pet. However, after adopting an animal at a shelter, the people working at the shelter will continue to provide care and support. They often know a lot about the animal through personality and health tests, and they can be readily available resources to ease the transition.

A woodpecker's tongue is so long that it wraps around its skull
Animal Fun Fact #7

A woodpecker's tongue is so long that it wraps around its skull

In both humans and birds, the tongue is supported by the hyoid bone. The hyoid bone is a horseshoe-shaped structure under the jaw that gives the muscles in your tongue and the floor of your mouth something to attach to. It helps with breathing, speaking, and swallowing. In the woodpecker, this bone wraps all the way to the back of the skull. This not only gives the woodpecker a place to store its long tongue, but it also protects the bird's brain from injury during its high-speed pecking. When the muscles around the bone contract, it holds the skull and spine in place.

Polar bears have black skin
Animal Fun Fact #5

Polar bears have black skin

The black skin on a polar bear allows them to efficiently absorb sunlight, helping them to stay warm in their cold environment. The dark color also protects the bear against harmful UV radiation, which is intensified as it is reflected off of sea ice, snow, and water. While the skin is black, the polar bear's fur is translucent and only appears white because it reflects visible light. This fur allows them to blend into their environment.

Octopuses have nine brains
Animal Fun Fact #4

Octopuses have nine brains

They have one central brain in their head and one in each of their eight arms. The central brain controls the nervous system. It acts as a command center that is able to send out messages to each of the tentacles. The tentacles are able to gather their own sensory and position data then move accordingly, acting independently of the other tentacles. So, octopuses are able to achieve both centralized and localized control in order to operate efficiently.

The tigers' orange color is an effective camouflage in their natural habitats.
Animal Fun Fact #3

The tigers' orange color is an effective camouflage in their natural habitats.

While orange may seem to stick out to humans looking at tigers, common prey of the tiger like deer are only able to detect blue and green. Most terrestrial mammals, such as dogs, cats, and horses, also share this color vision. So, terrestrial mammals like deer perceive orange as green, making it difficult to spot tigers lurking in tall grass or crouching behind a bush. Green is a difficult color to produce in fur so the tigers choose the next best option to deceive their prey.

Wombats poop in the shape of cubes.
Animal Fun Fact #1

Wombats poop in the shape of cubes.
